Our Interview With Simon Tatum – Award Winning Director and Writer

Simon Tatum: Writer. Producer. Director.
Simon Tatum:
Writer. Producer. Director.

Simon Tatum is an award-winning filmmaker having shot all over the world for the likes of BBC, National Geographic and Discovery. He’s a long time friend and collaborator of Raintees so we caught up with him to see what he’s been working on.

Raintees: Hi Simon. So what drew you to documentary in the first place?

Simon: Well I’ve always been interested in people. Particularly people living on the fringes of society, living extraordinary lives. Documentary can really take people into worlds they never knew existed- it can open people’s minds and genuinely make a meaningful impact. That’s always been a hugely important part for me.

Raintees: Sounds like you’ve had some amazing adventures.

Simon: I have! I’m extremely lucky. I get to travel the world and experience things few people ever get to. That’s the amazing thing about documentary – you get to occupy a very intimate space with people and cultures. People welcome you into their lives and open up in ways they wouldn’t normally. It’s a real privilege.

Simon Dec 2011 Resting on pipeRaintees: So what are some of your favorite memories?

Simon: There are so many. I loved being in the Amazon – with Raintees funnily enough. Living with the tribe, being so isolated from the rest of the world was just magical. To be there really is to get a glimpse of the world before civilization. You really get a sense of how small you are in a place like that. Just stunning. Another favorite memory would have to be my time with the community of Centralia, Pennsylvania – a small mountain town that was ultimately destroyed by a mine fire burning beneath it. That was really my film school. I spent two years there, on and off. I really taught myself how to make a documentary by just getting out into the field and doing it. It’s a subject I’m going back to actually.

Raintees: Which leads me to my next question – what are you working on?

Simon: Well the Centralia project is going to be pretty special – a documentary filmed over the course of twelve years. Really enabling me to tell the story of the community in a way that has never been done before. But these days I’ve been moving further and further back into the world of movies. I’ve written three feature films and a number of drama pilots, but the project I’m most excited about is a stop motion animated feature film I’m doing with the team behind The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. It’s going to be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before! It was a lot of fun to write. I can’t wait for people to see it.

Raintees: How did that project come about?

Simon: Well it’s an interesting story. I was an Assistant Director on Tim Burton’s ‘Corpse Bride’ so I had established relationships with some of the greatest animation talent on the planet. But it really came about when I bumped into the director in my local supermarket. We went for a coffee to catch up and I very casually mentioned the story I had in my head. He just looked at me and said “That is pretty much my dream project. Let’s do it.” It’s funny the way things happen in Hollywood.

Enjoy Your Vacation While Leaving a Smaller Carbon Footprint

Unfortunately, tourism usually equals a negative environmental impact. But there are ways to travel without sacrificing your green lifestyle. One of the best ways to stay green is to keep it close to home. Whether you’re looking to rough it outdoors or stay on the shore in style, here are three of the best spots in the U.S. that involve water, fun for the whole family and eco-friendly tourism.

Hit the Beach Responsibly in Florida Vero Beach Hotel and Spa in Vero Beach, Florida, is a Green Seal-certified resort that goes above and beyond the standard to save energy and water. The hotel rewards its guests for being equally eco-conscious by offering discounts for parking for hybrid vehicles. The nearby Shark Bait rental shop sets you and the family up with fun ocean activities that give you a great and guilt-free workout. Sea kayaking, snorkeling and paddle boarding are great ways to work up an appetite and enjoy the ocean without polluting it. Just don’t forget your organic sunscreen, as new research shows that chemicals in old sunscreens are damaging coral reefs around the world.

Check out the Untouched Marine Life in Alaska It may be a little bit farther to travel, but the Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge works hard to counter the emissions it takes to get there, making it worth the trip. Located in Homer, Alaska, this small, eco-friendly lodge maxes out at 12 guests and is rated one of the top 10 eco-resorts in North America. With no other restaurants or stores on the property located in the heart of the Kachemak Bay State Park, you feel like you have the place to yourself.

The resort runs entirely on wind energy and hydropower, and it goes the extra mile not to interfere with the untouched wilderness on its doorstep, according to the National Resources Defense Council. Enjoy watching whales, seals and all kinds of wildlife enjoy the pristine surroundings right from your front porch. And if you have a group of 6 or more, you can have the run of the place for your whole stay.

Catch Fish in Montana Papoose Creek Lodge in Cameron, Montana, is in the Madison River Valley, 40 minutes from Yellowstone National Park. Even though the national park is one of the country’s crown jewels of wilderness, Papoose Creek Lodge is pretty special all on its own. Papoose is a full-service luxury lodge with the option of pioneer-style cabins and camping grounds. You can go canoeing, birding, horseback riding and hiking through 25,000 acres of gorgeous mountains and ranch land. However, that’s not why most people visit Papoose — they go because it just so happens to be one of the best creeks for fly fishing on the planet. But don’t forget that you’re just a stone’s throw from Yellowstone, and that means higher prices on bait and tackle. To avoid high prices, stock up that tackle box with plenty of fishing gear before heading out.

Happy Travels! Stay tuned for more!

How to communicate your brand’s ethical approach to your customers

More and more firms are putting a greater emphasis on operating in an ethical or sustainable way, and to make your business stand out from your competitors, you must communicate this to your customers. Research has shown that “green” consumers make up nearly a quarter of the consumer base, and they are more brand loyal than other consumer groups. They care about social responsibility and are prepared to pay for it, so it is in your interest to make sure they know about what you are doing.

Focus on one story

It is best to focus on one overarching story to convey to your consumers how your business is taking steps to protect the environment and protect our planet’s future. Target a feature that strongly relates to your brand, rather than making random, vague statements about sustainability. For example, if your brand is about performance, promote your sustainability efforts in the context of performance. How are your sustainability practices maintaining, contributing to, or improving the performance of your product or service? For optimum results, utilize the services of an internet-marketing agency that specializes in advising on marketing campaigns, such as Matomy Media Group. Metonym offers a full range of online advertising and marketing support, with tools such as the Matomy Marketplace. Be aware that too much information can appear dull to the general public; you have to get the balance right, so trust the experts.

Utilize social media

Utilize social media and social networks to spread the word. Show your consumers that you are keeping your promises with regard to social responsibility, and focus on the positives. Celebrity endorsement can quickly spark a social media buzz, and a quirky idea could trend on Twitter and other social media platforms. Consider placing videos telling a story on YouTube or Vimeo. Focus perhaps on a Fair Trade producer in Asia, or produce a short film that will invoke empathy. Include a “share” button on your social media updates and advertisements, and encourage recommendations from your followers by including competitions on social media.

Your company website

When customers click on your website, make sure that they are made aware of your social stance. Provide key information in your “about” page, such as how and why the company was founded, and how you and your suppliers are taking sustainability seriously. Use keywords such as “sustainable” and “fair-trade” in the titles of items or services on your website. This will provide instant recognition and attract customers, and the words will be displayed to users of the site who were not specifically searching for ethical items. You will alert new customers to your positive efforts as well.

Whether it is using sustainable products, operating environmentally sound practices in production, transport and onward selling and marketing, or supporting community projects or programs further afield, it is essential that your customers are aware of your company’s efforts. Customers, new and existing, will select a business that chooses ethical practices over one that does not, and you should therefore make the effort to build brand loyalty among them. Let your customers know about the good you are doing.
